Every year a friend and I take a road trip throughout sections of the country to visit smaller US cities that have minor league baseball teams. The reason? Just because they are there. These are not major teams like the Yankees or Cubs but instead they are places with team nicknames like the LumberKings, River Bandits and Kernels. Now the baseball may not be of the same calibre as the major league but the entertainment value in many cases can be even better, especially if you don’t mind looking like a goose. For instance, where else can an Australian be allowed (and openly encouraged) to race a blow-up horse on the field, during a game, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Exactly, only in the U.S. One of the wonders of rural USA is there is a great deal of interesting things to do, you simply have to look and retain an open mind. So get out there, learn how to milk a cow, stand in front of the world’s largest ball of yarn or gallop on a blow-up horse at a minor league baseball game; do something you never thought you’d do….you may find you enjoy embarrassing yourself…..I know I do.
